Witzig, a Grant County, Wis. native, discusses his service with the Navy aboard the USS Indianapolis and his experiences after the ship was sunk by a submarine attack, and his rescue after remaining in the water for 5 days.

The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was commissioned in 1932 and saw extensive combat duty in the South Pacific theater during World War II. After completing a secret mission delivering parts for the atom bomb in July 1945, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine. Witzig (1924- ) joined the Navy in 1943 and served aboard the USS Indianapolis until the ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine in 1945.
